Blogging Class-Week 2

Well at long last I have learned how to install a WordPress blog. Of course my journey was not without its pitfalls. For some strange reason my brain decided to go on vacation and while setting up the blog via Fantastico, instead of telling the software to create a directory for the blog, I left that area blank. Fantastico obediently installed the blog in my root directory.

“So what?” Well gentle reader, if you install a blog in your root directory and you already have a web site, you have no way to access the blog because when you click on the link it keeps taking you to the index page of your web site, i.e., the root directory…..duh……

If all of the above sounds like nothing but geek speak, just ignore me…..I do tend to ramble…..<ggg>.

It was quite late when I began my homework (1:00a.m.), so I was probably too tired to pay close attention to what I was doing.

(That’s my story and I’m sticking to it…..)

Anyway, after hunting around in WordPress help and finding nothing, it finally dawned on me what the problem was and I created a new blog and deleted the old one, both actions were pretty easy using Fantastico once I figured out the directory business. I don’t have Fantastico installed on my Nightshadow site , so if I want to create a blog there I’ll have to create the dreaded SQL database…..shudder…..
Bean says we’re going to cover themes in detail next week. I can hardly wait. I really hate this default theme…..can you say….”ugly”?

That’s it for now folks. Stay tuned for the further exciting adventures of “Nightshadow learns to blog”.

Hmmmm. I don’t have Fantastico. Do I pay them the extra $2 a month, or do I just tough it out & do it without it. The best you can say about the default theme is that it is a complementary colour scheme.

You did a super job,Elaina! What’s all this about a Nightshadow? Are you a super hero in disguise?Raffy would be very interested in getting some tips from you on evading capture and avoiding having his supurrr powers mewtralised by a certain power.

I think you did great from 1:00 am to 2:36 am. I spent much longer and have a non-working blog. I have to delete my sql database (I don’t have Fantastico) and start over. Yikes. Good job!

Well I am glad that Fantastico was easy for you to use. Those silly computers do exactly what you tell them to so if you don’t tell them to install somewhere else, well they obediently take up residence in your root directory. You got to practice installation and removal, luck you!

Setting up a MySQL database really isn’t that hard. It is just a new experience with some new terms to learn. When you have some time on a quiet day, give it a whirl!

PS. You will only have to live with this adorable and heart warming theme for one week. Next Saturday you can play with themes and pick something that fits your style and personality.

I love your humorous description here. I had mine all uploaded before I realized I didn’t have a high enough version of mysql! I wasn’t feeling amused at all :p

Hi Alice,

Thanks for the compliment and the silly stuff….love your sense of humor. About the Nightshadow stuff: I’ve been on the internet as the Nightshadow ever since I set up my first web site with Yahoo geocities way back when. An online friend gave me the name because I’m a confirmed nightowl. If you visit my PSP web site you’ll see a whole different persona there…

Hi QuirkyArtist,

There are so many good web hosts out there that unless you already have a massive site with a ton of stuff to move, you may want to consider changing hosts. If you would like some names, let me know.

Hi Carol,

Bummer! Nothing worse than putting in all that time and then ending up with zilch. Been there, done that. You have my sympathy.

Hi Bean,

Yes, funny thing about computers….just like 2 year olds sometimes…tell them to do something and they take it so darn literally. ;)

I’ve done SQL in the past, I just have to dig out my old notes and plunge in again because I would like to have a blog at the Nightshadow site…..or…..maybe I could talk them into adding Fantasico? lol

Re the ugly theme: I’m just happy that eventually we’ll get to change it…..booorrrrringggg……

Hi Anita,

One of the secrets to using anything involving scripts, software, etc. on the internet is to learn to laugh at yourself because otherwise you will end up crying. It’s unbelievable how many things can go wrong. Remind me to tell you about some of my PHP experiences one of these days.

I commend you for your fortitude! I am following along the best I can! This is so interesting and I could work for hours if I only had the time! I look forward to your journey!

Warmest wishes,
Karen

Congratulations!!! The best I’ve been able to do so far is to write the gentleman who owns the server that has my domain. LOL However…….I will get there eventually. ;o))

It’s looking good! Reading through the comments here, I’m thankful I’ve not been alone in my frustrations. I used Fantastico finally, at your suggestion. Now I just need for my new host to place my stuff on the Internet! Haha!

Thanks for all your help. This is a blog to keep reading.

Barb

P.S. It’s good to see Karen among us!

Thanks Barb. I’ll bet your new blog will show up by tomorrow. These web hosts are pretty quick. Using Fantastico was easy wasn’t it? The softward authors should get an award! :)

Thanks Karen. My biggest problem from here on in will be deciding what to write about.

Good job, Elaina/Nightshadow! Not only did you get it up and running, but you wrote an entertaining blog post. If only… says she who’s still staring at a blank install page.

Congratulations on bringing the beastie to heel! I, too, made an error during the installation of WordPress, placing it in my root directory rather than in a directory of its own. Fortunately, I was able to locate the set of instructions Wordpress had created for moving a blog from one place to another, and so was able to avoid the nuisance of deleting and reinstalling.

It sounds as if you’ve set quite a task for yourself, but the challenge will feed your creativity in any number of unexpected ways. And I very much like the violet-to-yellow gradient you’re currently using on your blog’s title bar.

Hi Shoshanna,

Thanks for commenting. I used the violet-to-yellow gradient to sort of simulate a sunset/sunrise. I’m waiting rather impatiently for permission to install a more personalized theme. :)

You’re doing good. I absolutely adore the colors! However, these are the colors that I am trying to get away from. I’m naturally drawn to black, white and red and need to try something else. Almost everything in my closet looks like your theme (smile). Thanks for allowing me the honor of visiting your site – Nards
