Easy Abstract

This is what you will be making.
(or something similar :)

Pastel abstract

For this tutorial you will need:
Corel Paint Shop Pro

The texture in this zip file. Dowload it, then unzip the file and put the .bmp into the textures folder located in: My Documents\My PSP8 Files\Textures.

Note: This tutorial was done in PSP8 but can be done in PSP9, although some of the screenshots are different.

Using almost nothing but distortion effects, you're going to create an abstract painting similar to the one above (in your own style and colors of course)

Letīs begin!

1. Create a new image, 72ppi. I started with a 400px by 300px image. Floodfill with white. Now grab the default brush...

Default brush

...set it to a manageable size, choose a color you like and make some strokes on your image. Choose a second color and make more strokes. Change to the air brush if you like, and paint over some areas. Keep doing this until you've covered your image with "paint" strokes like this:

2. Go to Adjust>Add/Remove Noise>Add Noise:

Gaussian
15%
Monochrome, checked

Why are we adding noise? First, because most of the effects in PSP work better with some texture added rather than a solid color, and second, because if we have any completely solid colors in our image and save it as a JPEG, those areas will have a "watery" look to them. By adding noise, the final image will look better.

3. Go to Effects>Distortion Effects>Lens Distortion. Use these settings:

4. Go to Effects>Distortion Effects>Ripple Use these settings:

5. Go to Effects>Distortion Effects>Wave Use these settings:

6. Go to Effects>Distortion Effects>Polar Coordinates. Check the Polar to Rectangular radio button.

7. Repeat Step 6.

Almost Done!

8. Go to Effects>Art Media Effects>Brush Strokes. Use these settings:

Brush Strokes

9. Go to Effects>Texture Effects>Texture. Click on the drop down box arrow and find the linen1-ns texture that you downloaded, then change your settings to those shown here:

10. Sign your image and frame, and your painting is finished.

Depending on what colors you use, and how your apply your paint, you can get some very interesting effects. I did the painting below with different colors and strokes. After I applied the texture, I mirrored the image. Voila! Another "Original"!
