Blackboard Sigtag

spacer

Here is an example of what we will be making.

Blackboard signature tag

Note: This tutorial was written using PSP 8, but has been tested using both PSP9 and PSPX.

This image can be used for either a sigtag or a scrapbooking element. To make it you will need Paint Shop Pro. (You can get it here:) and this Custom Brush preset.

Unzip the file and put the preset in your My Documents\My PSP8 Files\Presets folder.

Warning: This tut requires some FREEHAND Drawing......wink

1. Create a new image 400x300 pixels, then flood fill it with color #2D2D2D

2. Go to>Adjust>Add/Remove Noise>Add Noise, and set if for Monochrome/Gaussian. Set the percentage somewhere between 8% and 20%. (I used 20%.) Slate blackboards are not completely black, so unless you add the noise, it will just look like a dark background.

3. Grab your selection tool. In the drop down box choose Rounded Rectangle. Feather is at 0. Beginning at x=0 and y=0, draw a rectangle all the way across and all the way down your image, like this:

4. 4. Invert your selection, then hit the delete key to get rid of the corner pieces.

Do Not Deselect!

5. Invert your selection again.

Go to Selections>Modify>Select Selection Borders. Use these settings:

Selection borders

6. Choose your Flood Fill tool and set your foreground to Pattern. Open up the Dialogue in the materials palette and use the drop down box to find Woodgrain 01, and set it with the Angle at 0 and the Scale at 50.

Floodfill the selection.

7. Go to Selections>Modify>Feather, feather by 1.

Go to Effects>3D Effects>Inner Bevel, and use these settings:

Inner Bevel

DeSelect!

8. Go to Selections>Select All, Float (Ctrl+F), Defloat (Ctrl+Shift+F).

9. Go to Selections>Modify>Contract. Contract 16 pixels. Repeat the Selections>Float command. (Yes, I know, this seems a bit weird, but trust me, you have to do it this way, LOL.)

10. 10. Go to Effects>3D Effects>Cutout.

First cutout

Repeat the Cutout, but change the Horizontal and Vertical to 3.

Deselect

Now that we have our blackboard, let's put something on it.

11. Add a new layer. Change your foreground material to a color (I chose a light blue). Choose your Paintbrush tool. Open up the tool ribbon and click on the brush presets drop down arrow, then locate the BlackboardChalk_ns preset and click OK.

Now very slowly (if you write fast, you won't be able to read it....unless you're much better with a mouse than I am), write your name with your mouse. You may have to practice this a few times, but eventually, it will look like your name, I promise. :)

Note: When I finished writing my name, I thought it wasn't visible enough, so I changed the layer blend mode to Lighten. You may prefer to keep it in the normal mode. These directions are only a guide.

12. Want to make it look even more like chalk on a blackboard? Go to Effects>Texture Effects>Texture, and use these settings:

Let's decorate our blackboard! The decorations on the board are strictly up to you. The following is just an example of what you can add.

Note: This is the freehand drawing part I warned you about at the beginning. LOL wink

13. Add a new layer. I changed my foreground color to green, and proceeded to draw a stem and some leaves, changed the color again to pink and drew some petals, changed the color to yellow and made a flower center. Then I added the texture from Step 12.

14. At this point, I got a little lazy and just duplicated the layer with the flower, mirrored the layer image, and then moved it a bit. See the example image at the top of the page.

Well, my blackboard tag is done, and I think I'm going to make another one.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial.
